El Niño Update 07/16/2026
According to NOAA, El Nino has now reached "moderate" strength weeks ahead of schedule.
The World Climate Service reported temperatures in the Nino region are now 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above average reaching the threshold for it to be considered a "super" El Nino increasing the chances from 63% to 81%. There is a strong possibility this event could be the largest since record keeping began in 1950.
NOAA has released the most recent information about the 2026-2027 El Nino season below.
"There is a 63% chance of a very strong El Niño during November-January [Fig. 8] that would rank among the largest El Niño events in the historical record going back to 1950. Even very strong El Niño events do not lead to the expected impact everywhere, but stronger events can more significantly tilt the odds in favor of expected outcomes (see CPC outlooks for probabilities of seasonal anomalies). In summary, El Niño conditions are present and expected to strengthen into the Northern Hemisphere winter 2026-27."

As of September 1st 2025 the new general permit is increasing regulations and compliance effecting projects previously grandfathered in from the 2009 permit. The updated Construction General Permit significantly increases the compliance burden by requiring more frequent inspections, enhanced monitoring, and direct adherence to Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) limits for projects that discharge into sensitive waterways.
